How to Get to Ukerewe Island

Ukerewe is the largest island in Lake Victoria (Tanzania) and is reached by boat from the Tanzanian shore. Ferries and smaller launches operate from Mwanza port to Nansio (Ukerewe’s main town); crossings vary by vessel and typically take several hours. From Mwanza city centre the port is a short drive and is served by local minibuses and taxis.

Tips for Visiting Ukerewe Island

  • Plan your arrival via Mwanza and the regular ferry to Nansio (Ukerewe's main town) and use Nansio as your base for exploring the island-most services and accommodation are centered there.
  • Stay at least one night on the island to see sunrise over Lake Victoria and to visit inland villages and markets when day-trippers have left; this is when local life is most visible.
  • Hire a motorbike or local driver in Nansio to reach remote fishing villages and granite hill viewpoints-these inland spots are often missed by visitors who stay only near the ferry terminal.
