Why Visit Ujjain? #
One of India’s oldest sacred cities, Ujjain draws pilgrims and history lovers to its river ghats and temple rituals. The Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga temple is a major spiritual magnet, and the ghats of the Shipra River host dramatic aarti ceremonies and the famed Kumbh or Simhastha gatherings. Centuries of religious traditions, alongside archaeological sites and bustling bazaars, make the city an immersive window into Hindu ritual life and medieval Indian history.
Who's Ujjain For?
Ujjain is a major pilgrimage hub and budget travellers flock here for the ghats, Mahakaleshwar Temple and Kumbh events. Cheap guesthouses, busy bazaars and shared pilgrim routes make it an accessible stop on religious circuits.
For families interested in cultural and religious heritage, Ujjain’s river ghats, temples and manageable city size are easy to explore. Boat rides on the Shipra and simple guided temple visits suit multi-generational groups.

How to Get to Ujjain
Ujjain has no commercial airport of its own; most visitors arrive via Indore's Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Airport (IDR) or by rail at Ujjain Junction (UJN). The city is well connected by Indian Railways and regular intercity buses; Indore is the quickest air gateway.
Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Airport (IDR): The nearest commercial airport, in Indore, is about 55-60 km from Ujjain. From IDR you can take a prepaid airport taxi or app cab (Ola/Uber) to Ujjain - expect roughly INR 900-1,500 and about 1-1.5 hours depending on traffic. There are also shared/point-to-point buses and private cabs from Indore that cost much less (typically INR 30-200) but require a transfer into Indore city or to Indore Junction to catch some services.
Raja Bhoj Airport (BHO): Bhopal’s airport is farther (around 180-200 km). If you fly into BHO the usual onward options are long-distance trains or intercity buses to Ujjain. Road transfer by taxi will take ~3.5-5 hours and typically costs INR 2,500-4,000; trains and state/private buses are cheaper (see Train & Bus card for times and fares).
Train: Ujjain is served by Ujjain Junction (UJN), a major stop on routes connecting Indore (INDB), Ratlam (RTM), Bhopal and long-distance services to Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Jaipur. Short runs from Indore take about 1-1.5 hours; regional and express trains from Bhopal or Ratlam typically take 3-4.5 hours depending on the service. Fares vary by class and train - second-class/SL seats on short regional trains are inexpensive while reserved/AC fares are higher.
Bus: State-run and private buses link Ujjain with Indore, Bhopal and surrounding towns. An Indore-Ujjain bus takes roughly 1-1.5 hours and usually costs between INR 30 and INR 150 depending on service (ordinary vs. deluxe). Bhopal-Ujjain coach trips take around 3.5-5 hours with fares commonly in the INR 200-500 range for non-luxury services.
How to Get Around Ujjain
Ujjain is easiest to navigate with a mix of walking for temple precincts and short hops by auto‑rickshaw or cycle‑rickshaw. For airport or longer intercity transfers use trains or taxis from Indore; buses are a cheap alternative but slower and less comfortable.
- Regional & Long-distance Trains (Ujjain Junction, UJN) (20-800 INR) - Ujjain Junction is the main rail hub - many express and passenger trains call here connecting to Indore, Ratlam, Bhopal, Mumbai and Delhi. Trains are often the fastest, most reliable option for longer distances; book reserved tickets in advance for popular routes and festival periods. Expect travel times of ~1-1.5 hours from Indore and ~3-4.5 hours from Bhopal, with fares varying by class.
- Intercity & State Buses (30-500 INR) - Madhya Pradesh state buses and private operators run frequent services to Indore, Bhopal and surrounding towns. Buses are cheap and frequent for short hops (Indore-Ujjain ~1-1.5 hours); choose a deluxe/volvo service for more comfort on longer routes. Tickets can be bought at stations, bus stands or online for private operators.
- Auto‑rickshaw (30-150 INR) - Auto‑rickshaws are the most practical way to get around Ujjain for short trips between temples, markets and local neighbourhoods. Negotiate or insist on the meter for fair fares; many drivers expect short flat fares for tourist routes. Expect small fares for inner-city runs but higher charges for airport/intercity pickups.
- Taxis & App Cabs (Ola/Uber/intercity cabs) (150-1,500 INR) - App-based cabs operate in Indore and can pick up/drop in Ujjain; private taxis are convenient for airport transfers or day trips to nearby sites. They offer door-to-door comfort and luggage space - good if you're travelling with family or at odd hours. Intercity transfers (e.g., Indore airport → Ujjain) commonly cost INR 900-1,500; request fare estimates in the app before confirming.
- Cycle‑rickshaw (20-80 INR) - Cycle‑rickshaws are common for very short trips inside older parts of the city and for narrow lanes near temple complexes. They're cheap and slow but handy when autos can't access a lane; always agree a price up front. Useful for sightseeing at a relaxed pace and for short luggage‑free hops.
- Walking - Many of Ujjain's main attractions - the Mahakaleshwar temple complex, Kshipra ghats and nearby bazaars - are compact and best explored on foot. Pavements can be uneven and busy with traffic, so wear comfortable shoes and be mindful of scooters and rickshaws. Walking is often the quickest way to soak up the atmosphere in the old town.
