Main image

The Uinta Mountains are a high-elevation range in northeastern Utah that extend in an east-west direction across the northern part of the state. The range includes Utah’s highest summit and extensive alpine terrain.

The range was used historically by Indigenous peoples and later by trappers and settlers; it became a focus of recreation and conservation in the 20th century with the designation of wilderness areas to protect the high-country environment.

The Uinta Mountains lie in northeastern Utah, with a small portion extending into adjacent Wyoming, and form part of the broader Rocky Mountain physiographic province.

  • Unique orientation: The Uinta Mountains are the principal North American range that runs predominantly east-west rather than the more common north-south orientation of most ranges.
  • High point: Kings Peak is the range high point and the highest mountain in Utah at about 13,528 feet, making it a popular high-elevation hiking objective.

What to See #

  • Kings Peak: Kings Peak - the highest point in the range and in the state of Utah, forming a common objective for hikers and mountaineers.
  • Mirror Lake Scenic Byway: Mirror Lake Scenic Byway - a high-elevation road and recreational corridor that provides access to lakes, trailheads and alpine scenery within the range.

How to Get to Uinta Mountains #

The Uinta Mountains are reached by road from northern/Wasatch Front Utah. From Salt Lake City drive east (typically via I‑80 or I‑15 to US‑189/US‑40 and then local roads toward Kamas/Heber City) and connect to the Mirror Lake Scenic Byway (Utah State Route 150) for direct vehicle access into the high country and trailheads.

Driving time from Salt Lake City to trailheads in the central Uintas is generally about 1.5-2 hours depending on your chosen trailhead; once on UT‑150 you’ll find parking areas and trailheads spaced along the route.

Tips for Visiting Uinta Mountains #

  • Aim for mid-summer (late June-September) for the broadest access-many high-elevation roads and trailheads (including the Mirror Lake corridor) remain snow-affected into early summer and open fully only later in the season.
  • Use the Mirror Lake Scenic Byway (State Route 150) as your main approach to reach popular alpine lakes and trailheads; parking along this corridor gives access to many prime day hikes and scenic pullouts.
  • Beat day-use crowds by heading to trailheads well before sunrise or choosing mid-week starts; early starts also give calmer alpine conditions for lake views and wildlife spotting.

Best Time to Visit Uinta Mountains #

Visit in summer for the best hiking and trail access; shoulder season brings fewer people but earlier snow at high elevations.

Summer (hiking/climbing season)
June-August · 5-20°C
Snow is largely gone at higher elevations, opening trails, lakes and passes - the main season for hiking, backpacking and peak access.
Autumn (quiet, crisp conditions)
September-October · -5-10°C
Cooler temperatures and fall colors at lower elevations; fewer crowds but early snowfall can close higher routes late in the season.
Winter and spring (snow season)
November-May · -20-0°C
Heavy snow and cold make the range a destination for winter recreation and backcountry skiing; many summer routes are snowbound or inaccessible.
