Uglich Reservoir

The Uglich Reservoir is a man-made impoundment on the Volga River in Yaroslavl Oblast, Russia, formed by the Uglich Hydroelectric Station and dam constructed around 1940. It is part of the Volga’s system of reservoirs created for hydroelectric power, navigation and water management.

The reservoir flooded sections of the river valley to create a navigable stretch and a headpond for the power station; the dam and associated infrastructure are the most prominent visible features. Local towns such as Uglich sit on the reservoir’s banks and offer viewpoints to the dam and impounded river.

The reservoir was established in the Soviet period as part of regional electrification and river regulation projects; it remains an operational hydroelectric and navigation facility managed as part of the Volga waterway system.

It lies in Yaroslavl Oblast on the Volga River, with the town of Uglich directly adjacent to the reservoir and larger regional centres reachable by road from the site.
