Tzintzuntzan is a pre-Columbian archaeological site on the eastern shore of Lake Pátzcuaro in Michoacán, Mexico, that served as the capital of the Purépecha (Tarascan) state in the late pre-Hispanic period.
Tzintzuntzan was a major political and ceremonial centre of the Purépecha state from the late Postclassic period until the Spanish conquest in the 16th century; after contact with the Spanish the political centre was altered and the colonial settlement developed nearby.
Lies on the lakeshore in central Michoacán, adjacent to the modern town of Tzintzuntzan and overlooking Lake Pátzcuaro in western Mexico.
