Twickenham Stadium
Stadium England rugby stadium and national team home
Europe’s largest dedicated rugby stadium, Twickenham hosts England internationals, club matches and large concerts. Fans attend for matchday atmosphere, guided stadium and World Rugby Museum tours, and riverside pubs in Twickenham village.
Twickenham Stadium is the largest dedicated rugby union stadium in the world, located in Twickenham in southwest London. It is the home ground of the England national rugby union team and is owned and operated by the Rugby Football Union.
The stadium holds about 82,000 spectators and hosts international Test matches, club fixtures and large concerts; pitch-level visits and the stadium tour including the players’ tunnel and dressing rooms are popular for fans. On match days the stadium precinct fills with supporters and official fan activities.
Originally opened in 1909, Twickenham has been expanded and redeveloped several times through the 20th and early 21st centuries to reach its current capacity and modern spectator facilities. It has hosted Rugby World Cup matches and major domestic and international fixtures.
The stadium sits in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, a short distance from central London by rail from Twickenham station and accessible by road; it is surrounded by suburban areas rather than a dense urban core.
- Event planning: Major match days can sell out; check for ticketing and travel plans in advance when Six Nations or international tests are scheduled.
What to See #
- World Rugby Museum: A museum and visitor centre dedicated to rugby history, exhibitions cover international matches, memorabilia and the development of the sport; it is situated within the stadium complex and open to visitors on non-match days.
How to Get to Twickenham Stadium #
Twickenham Stadium is in west London. From London Waterloo take South Western Railway trains to Twickenham station (journey about 20-25 minutes); the station is roughly a 10-15 minute walk to the stadium (follow signs on match days). You can also reach the area from Richmond (District Line and Overground) with a short bus or taxi onward.
By car the stadium is about 10 miles (≈16 km) west of central London (Charing Cross) via the A316/A305; on match days local road closures and parking restrictions apply so trains and official matchday buses are often preferable.
Tips for Visiting Twickenham Stadium #
- Use Twickenham railway station (short walk from the stadium) or Richmond station plus a short bus/taxi - public transport is far quicker than driving on match days and the stadium is well signed from the stations.
- Check your ticket for the allocated turnstile/gate and arrive 60-90 minutes before kick‑off to avoid the busiest entry queues and to soak up the pre‑match atmosphere in the fan zones.
- Book a stadium guided tour or tickets to the World Rugby Museum in advance - the museum and behind‑the‑scenes tours are inside the stadium and are frequently missed by matchday visitors focused only on the game.
Best Time to Visit Twickenham Stadium #
Visit on non‑match weekdays or during the summer off‑season for tours with fewer crowds; match days are lively but very busy.
