Twente

Twente is a cultural and geographic region in the province of Overijssel in eastern Netherlands, centred on the city of Enschede. It is known for its industrial past and the presence of the University of Twente.

The region combines small cities, market towns and agricultural countryside, with a network of minor rivers and hedgerow fields. Visitors commonly explore town museums, short hiking routes and dedicated cycling paths that link settlements and nature reserves.

Twente developed as a rural area in the Middle Ages and industrialised in the 19th and early 20th centuries around textile and machine industries; many towns later diversified into light industry and services. The creation of the University of Twente in 1961 strengthened a shift toward research and technology.

Geographically it sits in eastern Overijssel, bordering Germany to the east. The landscape is low-lying and gently rolling, a mix of farmland, heath and small wooded areas, with Enschede as the region’s main urban hub.
