Tutuila is the largest and most populous island in American Samoa and contains the territory’s capital and principal port. The island combines steep volcanic ridges, sheltered harbours and coastal villages.

Key attractions include deep natural harbours and viewpoints above those inlets, coastal villages with Samoan cultural life, and protected coastline within the Tutuila unit of the National Park of American Samoa. The island is used for government, commerce and as the main transport hub for the territory.

Tutuila was settled by Polynesian peoples in prehistory and later became part of the territory of American Samoa following agreements with the United States at the turn of the 20th century. Throughout the 20th century Pago Pago developed as the island’s administrative and maritime centre.

Geographically it lies in the South Pacific within the Samoan archipelago, with the main town of Pago Pago on the island’s southern coast and steep, forested interior ridges rising inland.

  • Administrative centre: Home to the territorial capital and main port, providing most government and commercial services for American Samoa.
  • Best viewpoints: Coastal viewpoints such as the Mount Alava ridge and locations around Pago Pago Harbour provide the clearest panoramas of the island's interior and seascapes.
