Main image

Turning Torso is a residential and office skyscraper in Malmö, Sweden, designed by Santiago Calatrava and completed in the mid-2000s. The tower is notable for its twisting geometry and is a landmark of Malmö’s waterfront redevelopment.

The building rotates roughly 90 degrees from its base to the top across its stack of floors and rises to approximately 190 metres with just over 50 storeys. Its distinctive silhouette and engineering make it a focal point for the Västra Hamnen neighbourhood.

Turning Torso was conceived as part of a broader redevelopment of the former industrial and harbour area into mixed-use urban fabric. The tower is predominantly residential with some office space and is visually prominent from waterfront promenades and nearby green spaces.

The building is located on Malmö’s western harbour, within walking distance of the city centre and local transport connections across the Øresund region.

Tips for Visiting Turning Torso #

  • Don't expect public access inside most of the building-Turning Torso is a private residential tower, so the best approach is to view and photograph it from the Västra Hamnen promenade or Ribersborg beach.
  • Visit at golden hour (late afternoon/early evening) for the most striking light on the twisted façade and to enjoy the harbourfront cafés and public spaces in Västra Hamnen.
  • Combine your visit with a stroll along the western harbour quays and the new quay-side developments-many visitors focus only on the tower and miss the broader waterfront regeneration and viewpoints.
