Philadelphia
Archaeological Site Ancient Lydian/Roman city, now Alaşehir in Manisa
Ancient city of Philadelphia in Lydia, today Alasehir in Manisa province; attracts those interested in Byzantine and Ottoman layers, ruins and the old town.
Philadelphia is an ancient city in the region of Lydia, located in what is now Manisa Province in western Turkey and identified with the modern town of Alaşehir. The city is historically notable as one of the Seven Churches mentioned in the New Testament Book of Revelation.
The Hellenistic city was refounded or renamed in the Hellenistic period and later formed part of the Roman and Byzantine provincial systems. It served as a regional agricultural and market center in interior Lydia.
Over centuries the site experienced earthquakes and shifting political control under Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, and later Turkish authorities, with many of its ancient structures reduced to ruins or incorporated into later settlement layers.
Geographically the ancient city lies inland on the fertile Gediz (ancient Hermus) plain near the base of Mount Spil (Spil Daği), within the administrative boundaries of modern Manisa Province. The ruins and modern town are accessible from the city of Manisa.
- Modern identification and biblical reference: Identified with the modern town of Alaşehir in Manisa Province and listed among the Seven Churches in the Book of Revelation.
