Aphrodisias is an ancient Greco-Roman city in Denizli Province named for Aphrodite and known for its large temple and sculpture workshops. The site preserves a broad ensemble of public buildings and sculptural decoration from the Hellenistic and Roman periods.
The Temple of Aphrodite, the richly decorated Sebasteion, a large theatre and a stadium, plus an extensive urban plan with streets and monumental gateways. The city is especially notable for its high-quality marble carving and a sculptors’ school whose work is visible across the site.
Aphrodisias flourished in Hellenistic times and reached prominence under Roman rule; its surviving monuments reflect major public building projects and civic patronage in antiquity. Excavations and conservation have revealed detailed sculptural programs and urban infrastructure.
The ruins lie near the modern village of Geyre in Denizli Province, inland in western Turkey, within a rural landscape of fields and rolling hills.

How to Get to Aphrodisias #
Aphrodisias is the archaeological site accessed by road from the nearby towns (the modern village of Geyre / Karacasu area). The site has on-site parking; visitors typically reach it by car or by regional bus/minibus services from nearby district centres (Aydın/Denizli area). From the nearest village the entrance is a short walk; there is no rail service directly to the site.
Tips for Visiting Aphrodisias #
- Arrive at opening time in the morning to explore the site before heat and tour groups arrive; the site is exposed so mornings give cooler conditions and better light for the reliefs.
- Enter via the main museum/visitor-centre complex-start in the on-site museum to see many original sculptures and then follow the marked path to the Tetrapylon and the Theatre so you understand context.
- Don't rush past the stadium and the well-preserved street plan; visitors often linger at the Tetrapylon and miss the scale and layout visible from the stadium and elevated walkways.
