Main image

The Turgay Plateau is an extensive steppe and semi-arid plateau region in north-central Kazakhstan, characterised by flat plains, grassland and seasonal wetlands. It forms part of the broader Kazakh steppe landscape and supports steppe vegetation and pastoral land use.

The plateau is noted for its wide open landscapes, seasonal migration routes for birds and pastoral grazing rather than for developed tourist infrastructure. It has been the focus of geological and palaeontological interest in places where sedimentary sequences and fossil deposits are exposed.

Geographically the plateau lies within the Aktobe Region and neighbouring parts of central Kazakhstan; access is typically by regional roads from the nearest towns and regional centres.
