Tugela Falls
Waterfall Tall multi-tiered waterfall in the Drakensberg mountains
In the Drakensberg, Tugela Falls attracts hikers to the Amphitheatre escarpment for its multi-tiered drop and dramatic gorge. Visitors come for long hikes, cliff viewpoints and snowmelt torrents; routes are steep and best with proper gear.
Tugela Falls is a multi-tiered waterfall on the Tugela River in the Drakensberg mountains of KwaZulu-Natal, within the Royal Natal National Park. The total drop is 948 metres across five principal drops, making it one of Africa’s highest waterfalls.
Hiking trails in the Drakensberg reach viewpoints on the escarpment and the Amphitheatre, offering close and distant perspectives of the falls; many approaches require steep mountain trails and changes in elevation. Water volume varies seasonally, with the largest flows during the summer rainy months.
The falls were formed by the Tugela River cutting through the basalt escarpment of the Drakensberg over geological time. The site has long been part of local geography and is now inside the protected area of the national park.
Tugela Falls sits on the eastern escarpment of the Drakensberg range in northeastern KwaZulu-Natal, within Royal Natal National Park. The nearest small towns are in the foothills of the Drakensberg; the falls are accessed from park roads and trailheads rather than a major city center.
- Best time to see: The falls are highest during the summer rainy season when river flow increases; seasonal cloud or mist can obscure full views from some vantage points.
- Viewing points: A common vantage for views is from the Amphitheatre and valley floor in Royal Natal National Park, while longer hikes reach the top of the escarpment for a panoramic perspective.
How to Get to Tugela Falls #
Tugela Falls sits in the Royal Natal National Park in the Drakensberg. From major routes take the N3 (from Durban or Johannesburg) and turn off onto the R74 toward Bergville/Winterton, then follow local park roads into the Royal Natal National Park (the R74 is the main sealed approach road). Driving from Durban/King Shaka is typically a several‑hour journey (roughly 250-300 km depending on route and start point).
Once at the park, park at the Royal Natal visitor/car-park and follow the marked hiking trails to the Tugela Falls viewpoint and Sentinel Peak - the route is a steep mountain hike and requires several hours on foot; there is no regular public transit that drops you at the waterfall itself, so most visitors arrive by private car or guided tour.
Tips for Visiting Tugela Falls #
- Visit in the early morning and in the summer/early autumn period after seasonal rains - the falls are at their fullest after heavy rainfall and early starts improve visibility before clouds or mist build up around the escarpment.
- Use the Royal Natal National Park main trailhead (Sentinel car park) as your access point to the Amphitheatre and the Tugela Falls viewpoint - this is the standard route with obvious signage from the park entrance.
- Don't stop at the lower roadside viewpoints if you can manage the hike: continue along the Tugela Gorge/Amphitheatre route to the escarpment edge for the full multi-tiered perspective, but be prepared for steep, exposed terrain and rapidly changing weather.
Best Time to Visit Tugela Falls #
Go in late summer to early autumn (Feb-Apr) for the most dramatic waterfall flow, or in the dry months for clearer hiking conditions.
