How to Get to Tuen Mun
Tuen Mun is in the New Territories of Hong Kong and is reached most easily via Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) or the territory-wide MTR network. The town's main rail hub is Tuen Mun MTR Station on the Tuen Ma Line; a mix of Light Rail, buses and minibuses provide local connections.
Hong Kong International Airport (HKG): The main airport serving the region. The Airport Express runs from HKG to Kowloon Station (approx. 21 minutes) and Hong Kong Station (approx. 24 minutes); adult single fares are HK$105 to Kowloon Station and HK$115 to Hong Kong Station. From Kowloon Station you can transfer onto the MTR network toward Nam Cheong/Tuen Ma Line or catch a taxi or bus for the final leg into Tuen Mun (see below).
Taxi from HKG: Taxis (and hired cars) provide a door-to-door option to Tuen Mun; depending on traffic the trip typically takes ~25-40 minutes and fares are commonly in the HK$300-450 range one-way (metered).
Train: Tuen Mun is served by Tuen Mun MTR Station on the Tuen Ma Line (formerly West Rail / Ma On Shan link). The Tuen Ma Line gives direct rail to parts of Kowloon and eastward to Tai Wai; a typical ride to central Kowloon/Hung Hom takes roughly 30-45 minutes depending on the destination. Fares on the MTR are distance-based - use an Octopus card for best fares and quick transfers.
Bus: Kowloon Motor Bus (KMB) and other franchised routes connect Tuen Mun with neighbouring New Territories towns (Yuen Long, Tsuen Wan) and Kowloon; journey times vary from 15 minutes (local hops) to 50-70 minutes (to Kowloon) depending on route and traffic. Local green minibuses and franchised buses are the usual surface options for areas not directly on the MTR; pay by Octopus or cash where allowed.
How to Get Around Tuen Mun
The easiest way to get to and from Tuen Mun is by MTR (Tuen Ma Line) combined with the Light Rail for local hops. For many first-time visitors the MTR + Light Rail + Octopus card combo is the most convenient and cost-effective; use buses, minibuses or taxis when you need a direct surface route or when travelling with heavy luggage.
- Tuen Ma Line (MTR) (HK$6-18) - The Tuen Ma Line serves Tuen Mun Station and is the fastest reliable way to reach other parts of Hong Kong by rail. Trains are frequent (every few minutes at peak times) and connect through Nam Cheong and Hung Hom toward east Kowloon and the New Territories. Use an Octopus card for fastest entry/exit and transfers; luggage space is limited on peak services.
- MTR Light Rail (HK$3.5-9) - The MTR Light Rail covers Tuen Mun and Yuen Long neighbourhoods with many closely spaced stops, ideal for short local trips and getting to the town centre or ferry pier. Fares are zone-based and generally much cheaper than heavy rail; Light Rail interchanges with the Tuen Ma Line at designated stops (e.g., Tuen Mun). Expect frequent services during the day but check schedules late at night.
- Kowloon Motor Bus (KMB) & franchised buses (HK$4-20) - KMB and other franchised bus routes link Tuen Mun with Tsuen Wan, Yuen Long, Kowloon and other New Territories districts. Buses are useful for direct surface journeys not covered by the MTR; travel times depend on traffic, so allow extra time during peak hours. Most buses accept Octopus cards and display route maps at major stops.
- Green minibuses (HK$6-20) - Green minibuses run frequent, often faster, door-to-door-style services on fixed routes around Tuen Mun and to nearby towns; they are a good option for places not well served by larger buses or the MTR. They accept Octopus on many routes but some remain cash-only - carry small change just in case. Be prepared for cramped vehicles during busy periods.
- Taxis (HK$40-300) - Use green New Territories taxis for trips within Tuen Mun and surrounding NT areas; they are metered and convenient for luggage or late-night travel. Fares start with a flag fall plus distance charges - short local rides are inexpensive while longer cross-harbour trips are significantly more. Taxis are handy for direct routes that would require multiple transfers on public transport.
- Intercity coaches & airport connections (HK$40-120) - There are coach and bus services linking Tuen Mun with the airport and other parts of Hong Kong; some dedicated airport and cross-boundary coaches serve nearby hubs where you can change for Tuen Mun. These are useful if you prefer surface travel with space for luggage - check individual operator timetables for fares and journey times.
- Walking - Tuen Mun town centre is compact and pleasant to walk around for short distances; walking is often the fastest way to get between nearby stops, shops and the waterfront. Pavements are generally good and pedestrian crossings common, but use caution on busy roads and when crossing near bus interchanges.
