Túcume
Archaeological Site Pre-Columbian archaeological site with adobe pyramids
In Lambayeque, Peru, the Túcume complex contains dozens of adobe pyramids and platforms from pre-Columbian cultures. Tourists explore pyramids, on-site displays and guided archaeological trails in the valley.
Túcume is an archaeological complex in the Lambayeque Department of northern Peru known for a dense concentration of adobe pyramids and mounds. The site is a major ceremonial and administrative center for pre-Columbian cultures in the valley.
The landscape is dominated by roughly two dozen large adobe pyramids plus numerous smaller platforms and causeways, spread across several square kilometers; paths allow visitors to walk between major mounds. Interpreting signs and a nearby museum provide context for pottery, burial finds and architectural phases, making it a common day trip from Chiclayo.
The complex was constructed and used by successive pre-Columbian cultures of the north coast of Peru, including regional cultures often called Lambayeque (Sicán) and later Chimú and Inca influences. Archaeological work since the 20th century has focused on mapping the mounds, excavating burials, and conserving adobe architecture.
Túcume lies in the Lambayeque valley near the modern town of Túcume in northern Peru, within driving distance east of the regional city of Chiclayo. The site sits on relatively flat coastal plains used historically for agriculture, with easy road access from nearby towns.
- Pyramid count: The site contains about 26 major adobe pyramids and many smaller mounds concentrated in a single valley, often referred to as the "Valley of the Pyramids."
- Access and proximity: The complex is accessible from the town of Túcume and from the regional city of Chiclayo by road; visits are typically combined with the nearby Lambayeque museums.
