Mount Tsurugi (Tsurugi-dake, 剱岳) is a peak in the Hida Mountains of Japan’s Northern Alps, located in Toyama Prefecture, with an elevation of 2,999 metres. It is widely recognized in Japan for its rugged profile and challenging terrain.

The mountain is known for its steep rock faces, narrow ridges and dramatic summit views across the Northern Alps; the summit at 2,999 m is the main objective for experienced climbers. Routes are alpine in character and commonly require rock-scrambling and technical skills, which is why many visitors are experienced mountaineers rather than casual hikers.

Tsurugi-dake has long been admired in Japanese mountaineering culture and was included in Kyūya Fukada’s list of the 100 Famous Japanese Mountains, which raised its profile among climbers from the mid-20th century onward. Mountain huts and marked routes exist in the broader Northern Alps, but the final sections up Tsurugi are technical and exposed.

The peak lies within the Northern Japan Alps, part of Chūbu-Sangaku National Park in central Honshu, and is approached from valleys that feed into the high alpine zone of the Hida range.

  • Cultural listing: Often listed among Kyūya Fukada's "100 Famous Japanese Mountains," making it a well-known objective for Japanese alpinists.
  • Climbing difficulty: Climbing routes are steep and technical; alpine experience and appropriate equipment are usually required, and snow can persist into the summer months.

Tips for Visiting Tsurugi-dake #

  • Recognize that Tsurugi-dake (the Toyama Hida peak) is steep and often technical-attempt it only in the summer climbing season (mid-summer when the route is mostly snow-free) and with appropriate alpine experience.
  • Book mountain hut space or a guided party in advance during July-September, and plan to start very early in poor-weather-prone high-mountain conditions.
  • If you lack technical mountaineering experience, choose nearby non-technical viewpoints or hire a certified local guide rather than attempting exposed sections solo.
