Main image

Tsurugaoka Hachimangū is the principal Shinto shrine of Kamakura in Kanagawa Prefecture and the city’s historic religious and civic centre. It is closely associated with the Minamoto clan and Kamakura’s role as a medieval political capital.

The shrine complex features a long approach avenue, broad plaza areas, two decorative ponds and multiple shrine buildings including the main hall and a treasure house that holds historical objects. The precinct is a focal point for seasonal events, traditional ceremonies and local festivals.

The site was established in the late 12th century under the patronage of Minamoto no Yoritomo and subsequently served as Kamakura’s chief shrine during the Kamakura shogunate; the complex has been rebuilt and restored repeatedly after fires and earthquakes.

Tsurugaoka Hachimangū occupies a central, elevated position in the city of Kamakura, within easy walking distance of Kamakura Station and about 50 kilometres southwest of central Tokyo.

  • Best times to visit: Major annual events include New Year's first shrine visit and spring festivals when the precincts are busy; cherry blossom season and autumn foliage are among the most popular visiting times.

What to See #

  • Main shrine and treasure house: The main shrine complex contains the main hall, subsidiary halls and a treasure house with religious artifacts and historical objects connected to the shrine and Kamakura's samurai-era history.
  • Wakamiya Ōji (approach): Wakamiya Ōji is the broad, tree-lined approach avenue that runs from the shrine toward the former town centre; it forms an axial route used for processions and links the shrine to Kamakura's urban layout.
