Tsarskoye Selo
Museum Imperial suburban palace complex near St. Petersburg
Outside St. Petersburg, Tsarskoye Selo (Pushkin) hosts the Catherine Palace with its Amber Room, formal Baroque gardens and carriage museums; visitors queue for guided tours and stroll broad alleys in summer and snow-covered paths in winter.
Tsarskoye Selo is a historic imperial residence and park complex located in the town of Pushkin, about 24 kilometres south of central Saint Petersburg. It developed as a royal estate in the early 18th century and forms part of the historic ensemble associated with Saint Petersburg.
The site is best known for the Catherine Palace, its richly decorated Baroque façade and gilded state rooms, and the adjoining formal parks with ponds, avenues and garden pavilions. The Alexander Palace and the preserved Imperial Lyceum are other principal attractions; interiors, exhibitions and walking routes through the gardens are primary reasons people visit.
Development of the estate as an imperial residence began in the early 18th century under the Romanovs; major rebuilding of the Catherine Palace was carried out in the mid-18th century by Bartolomeo Rastrelli. The Alexander Palace and later additions date from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The complex suffered extensive damage and looting during World War II and has undergone long-term restoration since the late 20th century.
The ensemble sits in the suburban town of Pushkin (formerly Tsarskoye Selo), roughly 24 kilometres south of Saint Petersburg, surrounded by parkland and suburban development. It is included in the UNESCO World Heritage listing for the Historic Centre of Saint Petersburg and Related Groups of Monuments.
- Amber Room: The Amber Room in the Catherine Palace was looted during World War II and later reconstructed; the restored interior was completed and reopened to the public in 2003.
- Visiting tip: Best visiting times are early spring and late summer when the palace interiors are open and the park paths are clear; guided tours are recommended for access to state rooms.
What to See #
- Catherine Palace and Park: Main imperial palace complex built around an 18th century Baroque nucleus and set beside formal gardens and ponds; includes state rooms, private apartments and museum displays.
- Alexander Palace: Neoclassical palace completed in the late 18th century that served as a principal residence of the last Russian imperial family and now houses exhibitions about the Romanovs.
- Imperial Lyceum: Early 19th century educational institution where the poet Alexander Pushkin studied; preserved building and small museum recall its literary connection.
How to Get to Tsarskoye Selo #
Tsarskoye Selo (Pushkin) is south of central St. Petersburg and is served by suburban commuter trains (elektrichka) from Vitebsky Railway Station to Pushkin station; the train ride is about 25-30 minutes and the walk from Pushkin station to the Catherine Palace and park is roughly 10-15 minutes. By car it’s about 20-30 km from central St. Petersburg along Moskovsky Prospekt/Moskovskoye shosse; there are also regular bus and marshrutka services from the city along the same corridor.
Tips for Visiting Tsarskoye Selo #
- Arrive at opening time (the Catherine Palace typically opens early) to beat the large coach groups that arrive later in the morning; timed-ticket slots for the Catherine Palace and Amber Room sell out, so prebook online where possible.
- Take the suburban train (elektrichka) from St. Petersburg to Pushkin (Tsarskoye Selo) for a straightforward arrival and a short walk to the palace complex rather than relying on coach drops.
- After the palace, walk deeper into the Catherine Park-visitors tend to cluster at the main palace, but quieter features such as the Cameron Gallery, the Chinese Village and the park pavilions offer much less crowded exploration.
- If you want to see both palaces, plan separate time blocks: the Alexander Palace (which requires its own entry) and the Catherine Palace together can easily fill a full day when you include the park.
Best Time to Visit Tsarskoye Selo #
Best visited late spring to early autumn when the parks are in leaf and palace grounds are easiest to enjoy.
