How to Get to Tsabong#
Tsabong is a remote town in southwestern Botswana with no major commercial airport; most visitors arrive by road from Gaborone (Sir Seretse Khama International Airport, GBE) or by private 4x4. Expect long overland travel from major hubs.
Sir Seretse Khama International Airport (GBE): Gaborone’s international airport is the main air entry for southern Botswana. From Gaborone to Tsabong you must travel by road - buses and private transfers operate the ~6-8 hour journey; expect long overland travel times and plan connections accordingly.
Maun Airport (MUB) / Francistown (FRW): These northern domestic airports do not offer direct, practical connections to Tsabong; they are not useful arrival points if your destination is Tsabong.
Train: Botswana’s rail network (Botswana Railways) principally serves freight and the main Gaborone-Francistown/Debswana routes; there is no passenger rail service to Tsabong.
Bus / Intercity coach: Long‑distance buses and private coaches run between Gaborone and regional towns; Gaborone-Tsabong road travel takes roughly 6-8 hours by coach or shuttle and prices vary by operator (book local operators through Gaborone terminals). Local shared minibuses (combis) serve shorter hops but are slow for long distances.
How to Get Around Tsabong#
Tsabong is best accessed overland from Gaborone; long coach rides are the budget choice while hiring a private vehicle is faster and more flexible. Within town, minibuses, taxis and walking cover most needs.
- Intercity coach / shuttle ((Varies by operator)) - The common public option is coach or shuttle services from Gaborone to Tsabong; journeys are long (roughly 6-8 hours) over paved and unpaved stretches. Coaches are basic-book in advance and allow slack time for delays in remote areas.
- Private 4x4 hire / car ((Varies widely)) - Hiring a private vehicle, ideally a 4x4, gives flexibility and shortens travel time depending on road conditions. This is the recommended option for groups or travellers carrying equipment; fuel and driver costs make it more expensive than coach travel.
- Local minibuses / combis ((Low, local rates)) - For local travel and shorter trips around the Kgalagadi District, shared minibuses operate on informal schedules. They are cheap but can be crowded and slow-useful for nearby villages but not for comfortable long transfers.
- Taxi ((Low, fixed fares)) - Taxis operate within Tsabong for short trips; meters are uncommon so agree a fare before starting. Taxis are practical for reaching lodges or the bus/taxi rank from the town centre.
- Bicycle / motorcycle taxi ((Low)) - Bicycles and motorcycle taxis can be used for very short distances; sensible for local errands in dry weather but less reliable during the rains. Safety standards vary.
- Walking - Tsabong town centre is walkable for visiting markets and services, though distances to some amenities can be significant in the heat-carry water and sun protection.
