Trümmelbach Falls
Waterfall Series of glacial waterfalls inside Lauterbrunnen valley
Trümmelbach Falls channels glacial meltwaters inside a Lauterbrunnen mountain via tunnels, viewing platforms and lifts. Tourists arrive to walk inside the valley and watch several high-volume waterfalls carved into the rock.
Trümmelbach Falls is a group of glacier-fed waterfalls inside a mountain in the Lauterbrunnen valley of the Bernese Oberland, Switzerland. The falls convey meltwater from the high peaks of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau into the valley.
The falls have long been noted for their dramatic water flow and were developed for tourism with walkways and a lift to provide safe internal access in the 19th and 20th centuries. They are part of the longstanding mountain-tourism infrastructure in the Lauterbrunnen valley.
The falls are located in the Lauterbrunnen valley in the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland, a short distance from the village of Lauterbrunnen and within the valley that is recognized for its steep cliffs and high alpine scenery.
- Water source and best season: The falls drain glacial melt from the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau massif and are accessible year-round, with highest flow after snowmelt in late spring and early summer.
What to See #
- Underground waterfall series: A set of ten glacier-fed waterfalls contained within a narrow mountain gorge, connected by an internal system of tunnels, lifts and walkways for visitor access.
- Access infrastructure: Visitor facilities that include a short lift ride and stairways carved into the rock to reach multiple viewing platforms along the falls.
How to Get to Trümmelbach Falls #
From Interlaken take the Berner Oberland Bahn (BOB) train to Lauterbrunnen (about 15-20 minutes). From Lauterbrunnen board the local PostBus (PostAuto) toward Stechelberg and get off at the Trümmelbach/Stechelberg stop (bus ride ~10 minutes); the falls’ entrance is a short 5-15 minute walk uphill from the stop.
If you drive, follow the valley road from Lauterbrunnen/Interlaken into the Lauterbrunnen Valley toward Stechelberg; Interlaken is roughly 15-25 km away by road (about 20-30 minutes depending on traffic). Parking is available near the falls’ visitor area.
Tips for Visiting Trümmelbach Falls #
- Go first thing after opening (or late afternoon) to avoid mid-day coach groups that flood the narrow walkways inside the mountain; mornings are quieter for photography and clearer views of each cascade.
- Enter at the Stechelberg/Trümmelbach visitor area-the falls are accessed via an elevator and tunnel system from the valley floor rather than an open trail, so follow the signs for Trümmelbachfälle to reach the correct entrance.
- Don't skip the upper platforms reached by the internal walkways-these give different framing of each fall and are less crowded than the main lower viewpoints, so work your way up through the tunnel system to see them all.
- Check local valley transport times (Lauterbrunnen-Stechelberg buses and cable cars) if you're arriving by public transit; coordinated schedules avoid long waits at the small parking and shuttle areas.
Best Time to Visit Trümmelbach Falls #
Go in late spring to early summer for the fullest, most impressive waterfall flow; summer offers best overall access.
