Trsat Castle

Trsat Castle is a medieval fortress perched on a hill above the city of Rijeka in western Croatia, overlooking the Rječina river valley and the Kvarner Bay. The site dates back to the medieval period and is one of the prominent fortified landmarks above the city.

The castle complex offers elevated viewpoints over Rijeka and the adjacent coastline; its visible features include a keep, curtain walls and terraced defensive works. It is a frequent destination for short visits and photography because of its panoramic outlook.

The site began as a medieval fortress and was controlled by regional noble families; it has been altered and restored across centuries, including notable 19th-century renovations that shaped much of its current appearance. The castle has served military, administrative and symbolic roles at different times.

Geographically the castle stands on the Trsat hill immediately above Rijeka on Croatia’s northern Adriatic coast. It occupies a strategic position overlooking the city and the passage to the Kvarner Bay.
