Troy
Archaeological Site Ancient city famed in Homeric epics and ruins
Archaeological mounds at Troy expose multiple occupation layers of the ancient city; tourists follow stratified ruins, a small museum, and a modern replica wooden horse near Çanakkale’s Dardanelles coast.
Troy is the archaeological site at Hisarlık in northwestern Anatolia associated with the legendary city of Homeric fame and with a long sequence of settled phases from the 3rd millennium BCE onward. The mound contains multiple occupational layers that together form the site’s long history.
Key visible remains include fortification walls, gate structures from several phases, and foundations from Bronze and Iron Age occupations; the site’s stratigraphy is divided into numbered Troy phases (Troy I-IX). The modern visitor area includes displays, information panels and a replica wooden horse that interprets the site’s mythic associations.
A Bronze Age citadel and lower town were occupied at different periods; pottery, fortifications and domestic remains document continuous habitation and rebuilding over many centuries. Archaeological work began in the 19th century and continued with major campaigns that clarified the sequence of occupation.
The mound of Hisarlık sits near the Aegean shore in Çanakkale Province, close to the village of Tevfikiye and roughly 30 kilometres from the city of Çanakkale.
- Multiple occupation layers: Excavations reveal a sequence of at least nine settlement layers spanning several millennia, making the site archaeologically complex rather than a single-period city.
- Excavation history: The best-known excavations were begun by Heinrich Schliemann in the 1870s, followed by later systematic work that refined the chronology and stratigraphy of the mound.
What to See #
- The Tell (Hisarlık): The multi-layer tell at Hisarlık preserves successive settlement phases commonly labelled Troy I through Troy IX, covering roughly the Early Bronze Age to the Roman period.
- Visitor area and replica horse: A modern archaeological park area with a reconstruction of a wooden Trojan Horse placed as a visitor exhibit and interpretive signage explaining the stratigraphy.
How to Get to Troy #
The archaeological site of Troy (Hisarlık) is reachable by road from Çanakkale city-approximately 30 km from Çanakkale centre (about a 30-40 minute drive). There are local minibuses (dolmuş) and excursion buses from Çanakkale and nearby towns that stop at or near the site; private cars can park at the site’s visitor parking.
From the parking area the ruins and museum are a short, level walk.
Tips for Visiting Troy #
- Arrive early, especially on days when cruise ships call at nearby harbours, to avoid the waves of tour groups that reach the site mid-morning and early afternoon.
- Enter via the main museum/visitor area so you can follow the marked trail through the archaeological layers (Troy I-VII); the stratigraphic sequence and explanatory panels are easy to miss if you walk only around the mound.
- Spend time at the lower museum and the replica Trojan Horse by the entrance-many visitors rush to the mound and miss the exhibits that contextualize the remains.
- Combine the site visit with a short walk to the nearby panorama over the plain and Dardanelles for the landscape context that explains Troy's location and strategic importance.
Best Time to Visit Troy #
Visit Troy in spring or autumn for comfortable weather and smaller crowds while exploring the open-air ruins.
