Trossö

Trossö is the principal island of the city of Karlskrona in Blekinge County, Sweden, serving as the location of the city centre and the historic naval base; Karlskrona was founded in 1680.

The island’s built fabric includes the naval port, dockyards and the grid-plan town core developed from the late 17th century. Visitors come to see the waterfront, maritime architecture and museums that interpret the island’s naval history.

Karlskrona was established by royal decree in 1680 to house Sweden’s principal fleet, and Trossö developed as the administrative and operational centre for that naval presence. The naval facilities and townscape were preserved and later recognised for their historical significance.

Trossö sits in the Blekinge archipelago on Sweden’s southeastern Baltic coast; the island forms the central part of Karlskrona municipality and is surrounded by the archipelago’s sheltered waters.
