Mountain range in Cyprus containing Mount Olympus peak

How to Get to Troodos (community)#
Troodos (Limassol District) is most conveniently reached by car from Larnaca or Paphos airports; Cyprus has no passenger rail, so intercity and local buses or car hire are the common options. For best access to trails and dispersed villages, rent a car or book a local tour.
Larnaca International Airport (LCA): Larnaca is a common arrival airport for visitors heading to Troodos. From Larnaca you can drive to Troodos in roughly 50-75 minutes depending on destination (Limassol‑to‑Troodos approaches are shorter). Taxis and rental cars are available at LCA; a direct taxi to Troodos will be substantially more expensive than using buses and typically takes about an hour.
Paphos International Airport (PFO): Paphos is also used by travellers to western Troodos areas; driving from Paphos to the Troodos foothills generally takes about 1-1.5 hours by car. Taxis and car hire are available at PFO as well.
Train: Cyprus has no national passenger rail network, so there are no train services to Troodos.
Bus: Intercity buses run from Limassol and Nicosia to mountain villages and to the Troodos mountain area; routes are less frequent than coastal services and timetables vary by season. From Limassol the bus to Troodos takes around 1-1.5 hours and fares are modest (typically a few euros). For greater flexibility, many visitors use a rented car or organised tours for Troodos.
How to Get Around Troodos (community)#
There is no rail access to Troodos - flying into Larnaca or Paphos and then using a rental car, taxi or intercity bus is the standard approach. For real freedom to reach trailheads and scattered villages, hire a car or join an organised tour.
- Car / Rental - Hiring a car is the most practical way to explore Troodos and the dispersed mountain villages. Roads into the mountains are well maintained but can be winding; a car gives flexibility for forest trails and viewpoints. Expect a 60-90 minute drive from either Larnaca or Paphos depending on your exact destination.
- Taxi / Private Transfer - Taxis from the airports or Limassol provide direct transfers to mountain hotels and trailheads. A one‑way transfer is convenient if you prefer not to drive, but direct taxi fares from Larnaca/Paphos to Troodos are substantially higher than bus fares - agree price in advance or use a prebooked transfer.
- Intercity Bus (€3-8) - Intercity buses connect Limassol (and sometimes Nicosia) with Troodos; services are less frequent than coastal routes and schedules can change seasonally. Fares are inexpensive (a single fare is usually a few euros) and a bus is a cost‑effective option if you can align with the timetable.
- Organised Tours / Shuttle - Day tours from Limassol and Paphos are a convenient way to see multiple Troodos sights in one trip, including short guided walks. Tours will include transport and are useful if you want to avoid driving on mountain roads.
- Cycling - Road cycling is popular on Troodos for experienced riders; climbs are long and steep in places. Use appropriate gearing and be prepared for variable weather at altitude.
- Walking - Walking and hiking are the main activities in Troodos: well‑marked trails range from short nature walks to multi‑hour mountain routes. Bring sturdy footwear and water; weather can change quickly at higher elevations.
