Tronchetto
Island Artificial island serving Venice's parking and transport hub
At Venice’s western edge, Tronchetto is an artificial island used mainly for long-stay parking and as a vaporetto hub. Visitors transfer there from cars or cruises before heading into the historic centre.
Tronchetto is an artificial island at the western edge of Venice’s main island group that functions primarily as a parking and transport hub. It was created in the 20th century to provide vehicle parking outside the car-free historic centre.
Large surface and multi-storey parking facilities occupy much of the island, alongside ferry and waterbus piers serving the lagoon and passenger transfers to Venice proper. The island is an operational element of Venice’s transport and port infrastructure.
A people mover system links Tronchetto to Piazzale Roma and the rest of the city, enabling passengers to transfer from cars and coaches to public transport and waterborne services.
Geographically it sits at the western entrance to the Venetian Lagoon, adjacent to the main road terminals and port facilities that serve Venice.
- Function: Serves as Venice's main vehicle parking island and as a transport interchange for ferry and waterbus services into the city.
- Connection: Connected to Piazzale Roma by the Venice People Mover, providing a quick shuttle to the city's main bus and car terminal since 2010.
How to Get to Tronchetto #
Tronchetto sits at the western end of the Venetian lagoon, reachable by car over the Ponte della Libertà. The People Mover (automated shuttle) connects Tronchetto with Piazzale Roma in central Venice (about a 3-5 minute ride). Vaporetto lines also call at Tronchetto for water‑bus connections to San Marco and other islands.
Tips for Visiting Tronchetto #
- Buy parking or people‑mover tickets before the main tourist surge-Tronchetto fills early in summer.
- Use the automated People Mover to reach Piazzale Roma; it runs every 7-10 minutes and saves a 15-20 minute water-bus or foot slog.
- If heading into Venice, park bikes on Tronchetto and take the vaporetto - driving in central Venice is impossible.
Best Time to Visit Tronchetto #
Tronchetto functions year-round as Venice's car park and transport hub; visit off-peak to avoid long queues for parking and the people‑mover.
