Trolltunga
Cliff Dramatic cliff ledge over fjord; strenuous hiking destination
Trolltunga’s exposed rock shelf juts above Ringedalsvatnet after a long, steep hike; visitors undertake the strenuous trail for the panoramic fjord-and-lake views and iconic photo opportunity.
A dramatic horizontal rock outcrop in Vestland county, Norway, jutting out above Ringedalsvatnet and a well-known natural viewpoint carved by glacial action. It is one of Norway’s most photographed hiking destinations.
The destination is reached by a strenuous mountain hike of about 28 kilometres round-trip from the usual start at Skjeggedal, with roughly 800 metres of elevation gain; the walk can take 10-12 hours depending on conditions. At the end, a flat rock platform projects over a sheer drop and provides panoramic views of the surrounding fjords and valleys; the edge is exposed and has no protective barriers.
The formation is a result of glacial erosion during the last Ice Age rather than human construction. Its popularity as a hiking destination grew in the 20th and 21st centuries as access improved and outdoor tourism increased.
Located in the municipality of Ullensvang (near the town of Odda) in Vestland county, the site sits above Ringedalsvatnet in a high-mountain area of western Norway, accessible from the E134 and local trailheads.
- Cliff details: The rock is an ice-age glacial formation standing roughly 700 metres above the surface of Ringedalsvatnet lake; there are no safety rails at the edge.
- Hike length and season: The standard hike is about 28 kilometres round-trip with roughly 800 metres of total ascent; best attempted mid-June to September in good weather.

Tips for Visiting Trolltunga #
- Start the hike very early in the day (pre‑dawn in summer if possible) to avoid the busiest hours on the rock and to secure photos without long queues; crowds build from mid‑morning.
- Plan your visit in the main summer season (roughly mid‑June to mid‑September) when the trail is generally clear of winter snow; outside those months consider a guided tour due to hazardous conditions.
- Use the established Skjeggedal/official trailhead access rather than informal parking along narrow roads; follow local signage and transport options to the trail start to reduce parking pressure and delays.
Best Time to Visit Trolltunga #
Best visited in summer (June-September) when the trail is most reliably free of snow and day‑hike conditions are safest.
