Trolltindene
Mountain Jagged mountain ridge including Norway's dramatic Troll Wall
The Trolltindene peaks in Romsdalen form a steep ridge near Åndalsnes known to climbers and base-jumpers; travelers come for technical climbing, via ferratas and fjord-facing mountain scenery reached by mountain roads.
Trolltindene is a mountain ridge in Rauma municipality, Møre og Romsdal, Norway, forming part of the Romsdalen valley and known for its steep rock faces. The ridge includes the famous Trollveggen or Troll Wall, one of Europe’s highest vertical rock faces.
The most prominent highlight is the near-vertical cliff of Trollveggen, which has a vertical drop on the order of 1,000 metres and draws technical rock climbers and BASE jumpers. The ridge itself comprises multiple peaks and arêtes that are visible from the surrounding valley roads and from the town of Åndalsnes; roadside viewpoints allow non-climbers to view the wall safely.
The ridge is a natural geological feature sculpted by glacial and erosional processes; it emerged over deep geological time and in recent decades became established as a major venue for advanced climbing and aerial sports. The area around the wall has been mapped and used by mountaineers since the mid-20th century.
Trolltindene sits in the Romsdalen valley near the town of Åndalsnes in Møre og Romsdal county, inland from Norway’s west coast. The ridge is accessed from valley roads that run through Romsdalen and from mountain routes leading up into the Hjelledalen and Romsdalshorn areas.
- Viewing points: Best viewpoints are from the town of Åndalsnes and from the road up toward Trollstigen, both of which offer clear views of the cliff face on fair days.
- Safety and access: Mountain weather is changeable and climbing the cliffs requires alpine experience and technical equipment; many visitors see the ridge from roadside viewpoints rather than attempt climbs.
What to See #
- Trollveggen (Troll Wall): A steep, nearly vertical cliff face about 1,000 metres high that forms the most dramatic section of the ridge and is a major objective for technical rock climbers and BASE jumpers.
- Trolltindene ridge: The mountain ridge in Romsdalen made up of a series of peaks and arêtes that form the northern boundary of the valley and are visible from the surrounding roads and Åndalsnes.

- Use Åndalsnes as your base and the Rampestreken/viewpoints above the town for quick panoramic views of the ridge rather than trying to reach the steep base of Trollveggen.
- If you plan ridge or climbing routes, treat the area as alpine terrain-start very early, check local conditions, and consider a guide; casual visitors should stick to marked viewpoints and trails to avoid hazardous rockfall zones.
