Main image

Troldhaugen is the former home and museum of Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg, located on the outskirts of Bergen; the property preserves his villa, composing hut and an on-site concert venue. It is a cultural site dedicated to Grieg’s life and music, open to the public for tours and performances.

Highlights on the site include the small wooden composing hut where Grieg wrote many works, the restored family villa with original furnishings, and a museum with manuscripts and personal items. The museum runs regular chamber music concerts in a small hall set within the grounds.

Grieg bought the property in 1885, had the villa constructed and used Troldhaugen as his principal home and creative retreat until his death in 1907. The site was later preserved as a museum to display his life and work and to host musical events.

Troldhaugen sits on a wooded plot near Bergen in western Norway, immediately outside the city, and is accessible by road from the Bergen city area.

  • Visitor program: Guided tours commonly include the villa, the composing hut and a short concert in the on-site concert hall; concerts frequently use original Erard and Pleyel pianos when available.
  • Dates: Edvard Grieg purchased the property in 1885 and used it as his principal summer and later year-round home until his death in 1907.

What to See #

  • Composer's hut: The composer's hut is a small wooden cabin preserved in near-original condition where Edvard Grieg worked; it contains the piano he used for composing and is a focal point for visitors.
  • Villa (Grieg's house): The villa is the family home restored to display original rooms, furniture and personal items belonging to Edvard and Nina Grieg, illustrating domestic life and the couple's working environment.
  • Museum and concert venue: The museum complex includes exhibition rooms with manuscripts and personal effects, plus a small concert hall used for regular chamber music performances on the site.

How to Get to Troldhaugen #

From Bergen city centre take bus line 12 from the city (warder: check Ruteinfo for current stops) or a taxi to Troldhaugvegen near the lake Nordåsvannet; the ride is roughly 20-25 minutes. There is a small car park at the museum. In summer there are also organized boat connections to special concerts.

Tips for Visiting Troldhaugen #

  • Buy timed-entry tickets from the Edvard Grieg Museum website to secure a spot on the 30-40 minute house tour - the small auditorium fills fast in summer.
  • Take the lakeside walking path past the composer's pavilion for the best views; the boat-house and the grave on the hill are quieter than the house itself.
  • Hear a recital if possible: the museum runs short piano concerts in the summer that bring Grieg's own Steinway to life.
