Trinidad and the Valley de los Ingenios

Trinidad and the Valley de los Ingenios is a cultural World Heritage ensemble in central Cuba comprising the colonial town of Trinidad and the adjacent valley that contains remains of the island’s sugar industry. The area illustrates the colonial-era sugar economy, urban planning and plantation landscapes of the Caribbean.

In Trinidad visitors encounter a well-preserved colonial townscape with cobbled streets, plazas and churches, while the Valley de los Ingenios contains the ruins of sugar mills, workers’ settlements and chimneys that testify to large-scale plantation agriculture. The combined site provides insight into urban and rural components of the historic sugar economy.

Trinidad developed in the 16th to 19th centuries as a regional commercial and agricultural centre; the valley’s mills and estates expanded during the 18th and 19th centuries when sugar production and enslaved labour shaped the local economy and landscape. Preservation efforts have focused on both the town’s built fabric and the archaeological remains in the valley.

The property lies in Sancti Spíritus Province on Cuba’s southern central coast, close to the modern town of Trinidad and within a hilly valley landscape that was suitable for cane cultivation.
