Trieste Cathedral

Trieste Cathedral, the Cattedrale di San Giusto, is the city’s principal church located on San Giusto hill and dedicated to Saint Justus. The present building reflects medieval rebuilding layered over earlier early Christian foundations.

Key interior features include a crypt and a baptistery, and parts of the building preserve medieval stonework and decorative elements. The cathedral’s hilltop position gives it prominence in the city skyline and clear views across Trieste to the Gulf of Trieste.

The site has a long religious history with an early Christian basilica on the hill followed by medieval reconstruction; the current form dates largely to work carried out in the medieval period with later restorations.

The cathedral stands on San Giusto hill within Trieste’s historic center, adjacent to the city castle and overlooking the Roman forum ruins and the port area below.
