Trident Volcano

Mountain Active stratovolcanic complex in Alaska's Katmai region

Part of the Alaska Peninsula’s volcanic group, Trident Volcano attracts flightseeing, geology trips and experienced hikers; access is by bush plane or boat, offering views of ash cones and rugged volcanic terrain.

Main image

Trident Volcano is a complex of lava domes on the Alaska Peninsula within the Katmai volcanic region of southwestern Alaska. It consists of multiple overlapping domes and cones rather than a single classic stratovolcano.

The volcano produced dome-building eruptions in the mid-20th century and has displayed intermittent fumarolic and eruptive activity since then. Its morphology is dominated by viscous lava domes and blocky lava flows rather than wide ash cones.

Trident forms part of the wider volcanic landscape of the Alaska Peninsula and is one of several active or recently active centers in the Katmai area. Volcanic hazards include dome collapse and local ash emissions.

The volcano sits on the Alaska Peninsula within a sparsely populated, rugged region of southern Alaska. Access is typically by aircraft or overland expedition from regional hubs on the peninsula.

  • Monitoring: Part of a cluster of dome volcanoes on the Alaska Peninsula, it is monitored for seismic and geothermal activity by the U.S. Geological Survey.

How to Get to Trident Volcano #

Trident Volcano is in the Katmai/Alaska Peninsula region and has no road access. Reach the Katmai area by air or sea: charter floatplane or small-aircraft flights from King Salmon (the usual park gateway) or boat/plane charters from coastal towns such as Homer or Kodiak. Visits require arranging bush flights or boat transport and appropriate backcountry planning; there are no public roads leading to the volcano.

Tips for Visiting Trident Volcano #

  • Trident Volcano lies inside the Katmai volcanic complex and is remote - access is by air or boat from King Salmon or by guided backcountry trips, so book flights or tours well in advance through authorized operators.
  • Do not plan close approaches: view Trident from established park viewpoints or from an aircraft tour and check current activity alerts from the National Park Service and USGS before travel, as conditions and access can change.
  • Combine a viewing of Trident with other Katmai highlights (bears at Brooks Falls, Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes) on a multi‑day itinerary rather than attempting a single‑site excursion from local hubs.
