Tresticklan National Park
National Park Swedish national park of ancient forests and rocky lakes
Protected area in western Sweden of old‑growth pine, lakes and rocky plateaus; popular for marked trails, canoeing and simple backcountry camping away from major settlements.
Tresticklan National Park is a protected area in Västra Götaland County in western Sweden, established to conserve expansive tracts of boreal forest, rocky plateaus and small lakes. The park preserves a largely natural landscape of forest and freshwater typical of the inland Dalsland region.
Marked trails and informal routes cross the park; typical attractions are hiking on exposed granite, views from ridge tops and access to small lakes for paddling and fishing. Facilities are minimal compared with more developed parks, so visitors should plan for basic backcountry conditions.
The area was set aside to protect representative old-growth forest and freshwater habitats and has been managed for conservation and low-impact recreation. Management emphasizes preserving natural processes and limiting infrastructure.
Tresticklan lies close to the Norwegian border in the Dalsland region, within Västra Götaland County, in the western part of Sweden. The landscape is that of the inland high plateau and lake-dotted terrain west of the main Swedish lowlands.
- Outdoor activities: Terrain is dominated by old-growth boreal forest, exposed bedrock and small lakes, making it a destination for day hikes, backcountry camping and canoeing in summer.
Tips for Visiting Tresticklan National Park #
- Go between late spring and early autumn (May-September) when snow and ice are gone and the main trails are clear - the park's exposed plateaus are best experienced in these months.
- Start early on weekdays to avoid weekend day‑trippers and to secure parking at the main trailheads; the park is small and popular locally, so mornings are quieter on the main loops and viewpoints.
- Make sure to walk to the higher rocky outlooks and inland lakes - many visitors stay on the easier shoreline paths and miss the park's panoramic viewpoints and old‑growth forest pockets which are reached by the longer marked trails.
Best Time to Visit Tresticklan National Park #
Visit in summer for the most accessible trails and mild weather; autumn provides color but cooler conditions, and winter limits access.
