Treskavica is a mountain massif in central Bosnia and Herzegovina known for rugged peaks, high pastures and small alpine lakes. It is a regional destination for hiking, mountaineering and nature observation.
Trails cross ridges and lead to a number of summit points and tarns; vegetation ranges from mixed forest at lower elevations to alpine grasslands higher up. The massif provides a network of multi-day routes and day hikes of varying difficulty.
During the 1992-1995 conflict the area was the scene of military operations and some parts were affected by fighting. Since the end of the war local authorities and organisations have worked on trail maintenance and safety information for visitors.
Treskavica lies to the southeast of Sarajevo within central Bosnia, forming part of the highland system that separates several river valleys in the region.
- Alpine lakes and hiking: The massif contains several glacial and alpine lakes and high meadows, making it a popular summer destination for hikers and nature walkers.
- Post-war history: The area saw military activity during the 1992-1995 conflict in Bosnia and Herzegovina; visitors should consult local guidance about safety and routes before traveling off established trails.
