Trebeništa

Trebeništa is an ancient necropolis in the Debarca area near Lake Ohrid in what is now North Macedonia. It contains burial mounds and graves dated to the late Iron Age and Classical periods, often associated with regional tribal groups.

Excavations at Trebeništa uncovered graves with a range of grave goods including metalwork, weapons and personal ornaments that indicate social differentiation and contacts with wider Mediterranean cultures. The site’s finds have been important for understanding burial practices and material culture in the region during the 1st millennium BC.

The necropolis was used across a span of centuries in antiquity and reflects changing burial customs and external influences in the western Balkans. Many artifacts from the site have been conserved and exhibited in local museums.

The site lies inland near the western shore of Lake Ohrid within Debarca municipality, set in a hilly landscape that transitions toward the lake basin and surrounding uplands.
