Tre Kronor (castle)
Castle Former medieval castle that preceded Stockholm Palace
The medieval Tre Kronor castle once occupied the site of today’s Royal Palace in Stockholm before the 1697 fire. Visitors explore the Royal Palace and local museums to trace the original castle’s footprint and history.
Tre Kronor was a medieval and Renaissance-era royal castle in central Stockholm, Sweden, named for its three-crowned symbol. It served as the principal royal residence and administrative centre until its destruction.
The castle comprised multiple fortified structures and royal chambers and functioned as Sweden’s main royal castle across several centuries. It was a centre for government, royal ceremonies and the royal household.
On 7 May 1697 a large fire destroyed much of the castle and many of its archives and interiors were lost. The ruins were cleared and replaced by the present Stockholm Palace on the same site during the 18th century.
The former castle stood on the island of Stadsholmen in what is now central Stockholm, at the heart of the city’s old town.
- Destruction and replacement: The medieval castle burned down in a major fire in 1697 and was replaced on the site by the present Royal Palace of Stockholm.
- Historic siting: Originally situated on the island of Stadsholmen, the castle complex occupied a central position in Stockholm's early urban development.
