Transfăgărășan

Transfăgărășan is a high mountain road that crosses the Făgăraș Mountains in central Romania, noted for its steep hairpins, long viaducts, and alpine scenery. It was constructed in the late 20th century and is one of Romania’s most famous scenic drives.

The route includes high passes, dramatic hairpin bends and lookout points offering mountain views; several engineered features and roadside stops make it popular for drivers and cyclists. Key visitor stops include a glacial lake at the summit and a tunnel that passes through the ridge.

The road was built in the early 1970s by the Romanian state for strategic and infrastructure purposes, involving large-scale earthworks and tunnelling through the Făgăraș range. Since construction it has become a major seasonal tourist attraction and an engineering landmark in Romania.

The road runs across the Făgăraș Mountains in the Southern Carpathians of central Romania, linking regions on either side of the range and traversing high alpine terrain.

• Seasonal access: Closed by heavy snow outside the warmer months; the high alpine section is typically accessible only in late spring to early autumn.
• Altitude: Highest point of the route reaches roughly 2,040 metres above sea level, offering alpine scenery and mountain passes along the drive.

• Bâlea Lake: A glacial mountain lake located near the highest section of the road, reachable by a mountain cable car in summer and a common stop for visitors to the route.
• Bâlea Tunnel: A single-car tunnel and service area carved through the mountain near the summit section of the road, providing a sheltered link at high altitude.
