Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt

The Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt is a major volcanic arc that crosses central-southern Mexico, forming a continuous highland zone roughly east-west for several hundred kilometres. It contains numerous stratovolcanoes and some of Mexico’s highest peaks.

Home to high, glaciated cones and active volcanoes, the belt includes peaks that exceed 5,000 metres in elevation and a mix of volcanic landforms such as calderas, lava domes and extensive lava fields. Notable features include large snow-capped volcanoes and active fumarolic vents; sections near Mexico City provide dramatic skyline views at distances of tens of kilometres.

The belt formed as a volcanic arc related to the subduction of the Cocos Plate beneath the North American Plate during the Cenozoic, producing episodic volcanism from the Miocene to the present. Individual volcanoes have long histories of construction, eruption and glaciation; some, like Popocatépetl, have been periodically active in the modern era.

Geographically the volcanic belt runs across the central Mexican plateau and coastal highlands, cutting across multiple states from the western volcanic provinces toward the Gulf region. Several of the major massifs lie within a few dozen kilometres of Mexico City and other large urban areas, while other segments reach nearer the Pacific and Gulf coasts.
