Town of Bamberg

Bamberg is a historic town in Upper Franconia, Bavaria, whose medieval core was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. It is noted for its well-preserved old town built on seven hills and for a continuous urban fabric of medieval and early-modern buildings.

The compact historic centre contains numerous churches, narrow lanes, and civic buildings clustered around the Regnitz River. Key visual highlights include the cathedral complex and the Old Town Hall perched over the river; several small riverside quarters and bridges give the town a distinctive layered appearance.

Bamberg developed around an episcopal seat established by Emperor Henry II; the town grew through the Middle Ages as a regional administrative and ecclesiastical centre. Over centuries its urban core remained largely intact, preserving a mixture of Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque buildings.

The town sits on the Regnitz River in northern Bavaria, roughly north of Nuremberg, and functions as the regional centre for Upper Franconia. The surrounding landscape is a mix of river valley and forested hills.
