Altenburg is a hilltop fortress overlooking the city of Bamberg in Bavaria, Germany, with origins in the medieval period. The site is used today for visits, events and informal exploration rather than as a large museum complex.

The castle complex includes a courtyard, defensive walls and a viewing area that provides panoramic views over Bamberg’s red-roofed old town and the surrounding Franconian countryside. Visitors commonly reach the site on foot from the city or by a short local bus ride.

The fortified site dates back to the Middle Ages and served the bishops and rulers of the Bamberg area; it has been rebuilt and altered several times since its original construction. In later centuries parts were restored and adapted for civil and recreational use.
