The Tower of Elahbel was a multi-storey funerary tower located in the necropolis of ancient Palmyra (Tadmur) in Homs Governorate, Syria. It dated from the Roman period and was one of Palmyra’s characteristic tower tombs.
The structure stood among rows of tomb towers and carved funerary facades that marked family burial plots in the necropolis. It featured carved reliefs and inscriptions typical of Palmyrene funerary architecture and was photographed and studied by archaeologists and visitors before its destruction.
Built in the Roman era, generally dated to the 1st and 2nd centuries AD, the tower served as a family tomb and contained funerary chambers and sculpted decoration. The monument survived in varied condition until it was deliberately demolished by ISIS in 2015 during the Syrian conflict, an event that drew international attention and led to documentation and recording efforts by archaeologists.
The tower sat within the Palmyra necropolis to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra (modern Tadmur) in central Homs Governorate, Syria. It was part of the archaeological landscape associated with the ancient city.
