Tower of David

The Tower of David is an ancient citadel located adjacent to Jaffa Gate on the western side of Jerusalem’s Old City. The complex contains defensive towers, ramparts and a museum dedicated to the history and archaeology of Jerusalem.

Visitors use the ramparts and terraces for panoramic views across the Old City and for museum exhibitions that display finds and interpret the city’s past. The museum occupies interior spaces within the citadel and frequently stages temporary exhibitions and educational programs.

The citadel stands on archaeological layers that reflect successive fortifications and reconstructions from Hellenistic, Byzantine, medieval and Ottoman periods; it has been used historically as a defensive stronghold and later adapted for public and cultural uses. Conservation and presentation efforts have shaped it into a combined heritage and museum site.

Geographically the Tower of David sits immediately outside Jaffa Gate, bordering the Old City’s western wall and near the modern Mamilla district of Jerusalem.
