Tour Saint-Jacques

The Tour Saint-Jacques is a free-standing Flamboyant Gothic bell tower in Paris’s 4th arrondissement, the surviving tower of the former Church of Saint-Jacques-la-Boucherie. It is a well-known single monument preserved after the church was demolished in the late 18th century.

The tower dates to the early 16th century and displays ornate Gothic stonework, statuary niches and a sculpted pinnacle ensemble; it stands about 50 metres tall and dominates the small square in which it is set. Visitors can admire detailed Gothic carving at ground level and join guided climbs to the top for city views.

Historically the tower formed part of a major parish church that was demolished during the Revolutionary period; the tower itself was preserved and later restored in the 19th century. It has served as a civic landmark and a reference point for the surrounding neighbourhood.

The tower sits in central Paris in a small public square in the 4th arrondissement, within walking distance of the Seine, the Hôtel de Ville and other central Paris landmarks.
