Tortola
Island Main island of British Virgin Islands with yacht marinas
Tortola, the British Virgin Islands’ largest island, attracts sailors and charterers to Road Town, beaches such as Cane Garden Bay, snorkeling spots and Sage Mountain trails.
Tortola is the largest and most populated island in the British Virgin Islands, serving as the territory’s administrative and transport centre. The island combines coastal settlements, sheltered bays and upland forest on its interior ridges.
Tourist activity concentrates on sandy bays and yacht moorings such as Cane Garden Bay and on the capital, Road Town, which provides ferry links and services. The island also contains protected upland areas that conserve remnant native vegetation.
European colonization established plantation agriculture from the 17th century and the island later developed commerce and maritime links across the Caribbean. Today Tortola’s economy is based on tourism, financial services and local commerce.
Tortola lies in the northeastern Caribbean Sea as part of the British Virgin Islands; settlements cluster along the sheltered southern coast while rural and hilly terrain occupies the interior and northern shore.
