Torre del Oro
Monument 12th-century military watchtower on Seville's Guadalquivir River
By the Guadalquivir River, Seville’s Torre del Oro is a 13th-century Almohad military watchtower turned small naval museum; tourists photograph its dodecagonal form, board riverboats nearby and stroll to the Real Alcázar.
The Torre del Oro is a 13th-century river watchtower on the Guadalquivir river in Seville, Andalusia. It was constructed during the period of Almohad rule and served to control river access to the city.
The tower’s distinctive multi-sided stone structure and riverside location make it a common stop on walks along the Guadalquivir. It houses a small maritime museum and provides views along the riverbank.
Built in the early 13th century under Muslim rule, the tower formed part of Seville’s defensive system and was linked historically to another fortification by a chain across the river. Over time it was used for military, defensive and administrative purposes and later adapted to civilian uses.
The Torre del Oro stands on the west bank of the Guadalquivir river in Seville’s historic centre, close to the Plaza de Toros and within walking distance of the Alce1zar and Seville Cathedral.
- Shape and setting: The tower is dodecagonal in plan and stands on the Guadalquivir riverfront in Seville's historic quarter, often visited together with the nearby Alce1zar and Cathedral.
How to Get to Torre del Oro #
Torre del Oro sits on the west bank of the Guadalquivir in central Seville near the Puente de Isabel II. Take Seville Metro Line 1 to Puerta de Jerez station and walk 5-10 minutes along the river (or along Paseo de Cristóbal Colón) to the tower.
From other central points (Plaza Nueva, Santa Cruz, Plaza de España) it’s an easy walk; taxis and many city bus routes also serve the historic centre and riverfront.
Tips for Visiting Torre del Oro #
- Approach from the riverside Paseo de Cristóbal Colón and the western riverbank-this is the standard access point and places you near the museum entrance within the tower.
- Time your visit for early morning or late afternoon to enjoy the tower's reflection on the Guadalquivir and to avoid the peak river‑cruise crowds that flood the riverside midday.
- Check the Torre del Oro's museum opening hours before you go-the naval museum is small and has set hours, and many visitors miss the short interior exhibits and the panoramic view from the tower top.
