A contiguous ensemble in central Seville comprising the Cathedral, the Royal Alcázar and the Archivo General de Indias, representing outstanding examples of Gothic and Mudéjar architecture and the administrative legacy of Spain’s overseas empire.

The cathedral is notable for its vast Gothic interior, monumental nave and chapels, and its incorporation of the former mosque’s minaret as the Giralda bell tower. The Alcázar offers richly decorated Mudéjar and later royal apartments set within formal gardens, and the Archivo de Indias holds extensive documentary records of Spain’s colonial administration and maritime trade.

The cathedral was constructed from the early 15th century on the site of a former mosque and became a major ecclesiastical seat. The Alcázar developed from medieval and earlier royal and fortified structures into a ceremonial palace with successive additions in Mudéjar, Gothic and Renaissance styles. The Archivo de Indias was established to centralise and preserve imperial documentation related to Spain’s American territories.

All three monuments lie in the historic centre of Seville in Andalusia, southern Spain, clustered near the Guadalquivir River and accessible on foot from the city centre.

From Seville Santa Justa train station, take a 20-25 minute walk west along Avenida de la Constitución toward the cathedral and Plaza del Triunfo. Bus lines (e.g., C1, C2 circulars) stop near Plaza Nueva; the cathedral is a 5-10 minute walk from there. If driving, park outside the historical center and walk in - many streets are pedestrianized.

• Buy combined tickets online for the Cathedral to avoid lines; climb the Giralda ramp rather than the elevator for better views and insight into its mosque-era design.
• Visit the Alcázar early (opening at 9:30am) to see the Patio de las Doncellas before tour groups arrive; the lower gardens open later and are less crowded.
• Most visitors miss the Archivo de Indias reading room - step inside quietly to see the 16th-18th century shipping logs that made an empire.
