Torpo Stave Church

Torpo Stave Church is a medieval wooden stave church in the village of Torpo in Ål municipality in the Hallingdal valley (historic Buskerud) in southern Norway. It dates to the late 12th century and is one of the surviving Norwegian stave churches from the medieval period.

The church’s defining features are its timber post-and-beam construction, vertical wooden staves, and carved wooden fittings on portals and roof elements. Visitors commonly inspect the exterior carvings and the interior wooden architecture; the building is small and visited for its craftsmanship rather than scale.

The church was built as a parish church in the medieval period and remained in ecclesiastical use for centuries before being preserved as a historic structure in the modern era. It has undergone conservation work to maintain the original wooden structure and decorative details.
