Toronto Islands
Islands Parkland archipelago offering city skyline views and beaches
Just a short ferry from downtown Toronto, the car-free Toronto Islands offer beaches, bike and kayak rentals, picnic areas, skyline views, and family attractions like Centreville amusement park.
The Toronto Islands are a chain of small islands in Lake Ontario lying just offshore from downtown Toronto, forming an archipelago of about 15 islands and islets. They function as a large urban park and recreational area that is reached by short ferry rides from the city’s waterfront.
The islands host beaches, playgrounds, picnic areas, sports fields and the Centreville family amusement park; parts of the islands include year-round residential neighbourhoods. The western end of the archipelago contains the island airport known as Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, while Centre Island, Ward’s Island and Hanlan’s Point are the most visited locations.
The islands are situated less than 2 kilometres from Toronto’s downtown core and are a frequent day-trip destination in spring and summer for swimming, cycling and waterfront recreation.
- Ferry service: Ferries from the Jack Layton Ferry Terminal reach the islands in roughly 8-15 minutes, with services to Centre Island, Ward's Island and Hanlan's Point.
- Car-free: Most of the islands are car-free, which makes them popular for cycling, walking and family recreation during the summer months.
What to See #
- Centre Island: Serves as the main family and recreational hub, with beaches, picnic areas and the Centreville small amusement park on the central islands.
- Ward's Island: A small, year-round residential community with houses and a ferry landing; connected to Centre Island by a footbridge and seasonal services.
- Hanlan's Point: Known for its waterfront parkland and a clothing-optional beach; popular with swimmers and sports users in summer.
- Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport: A working regional airport occupying the western part of the islands and serving short-haul flights to regional airports; located on the western tip of the archipelago.
How to Get to Toronto Islands #
The Toronto Islands are reached by ferry from the Jack Layton/Harbourfront ferry terminal on Queens Quay (next to Harbourfront Centre). From Union Station it’s about a 15-20 minute walk (roughly 1.5-2 km) along the waterfront to the terminal, or you can take the TTC streetcar along Queens Quay to the harbourfront stops. Seasonal and year‑round ferries sail to Centre Island, Ward’s Island and Hanlan’s Point; water taxis are also available from the downtown waterfront.
Tips for Visiting Toronto Islands #
- Take the first or last ferry from Jack Layton (Billy Bishop) Terminal to avoid the midday surge of day-trippers and cruise-ship passengers; queues are smallest early and late in the day.
- Use the Jack Layton Ferry Terminal on the Toronto waterfront (Union Station area) - it's the main departure point with the most frequent service to Centre Island.
- Check the ferry schedule and last-return times before you go so you're not caught out by reduced evening service, especially on weekdays and in shoulder seasons.
- Beyond Centre Island, head to Ward's Island and the less-visited eastern beaches or the Gibraltar Point Lighthouse for quieter spots most day visitors miss.
Best Time to Visit Toronto Islands #
Visit the Toronto Islands on a weekday in late spring, early autumn, or a summer morning to avoid weekend crowds and enjoy milder conditions.
