Main image

Tornetre4sk is a large subarctic lake in Norrbotten County in Swedish Lapland. It is one of the largest lakes in the region, fed by mountain streams and glacial runoff.

The lake is a hub for outdoor recreation, with fishing, hiking and opportunities to view northern lights in winter. Several settlements and visitor facilities on the lake’s shores serve hikers and tourists exploring nearby national parks.

Tornetre4sk is a glacially formed lake; its shores and surrounding valleys have supported seasonal and permanent settlement for centuries and were traditionally used for fishing and reindeer herding by Sámi communities.

The lake lies in the Tornedalen/Scandinavian mountain region of northern Sweden, near the village and transport hubs that link the E10 route between Kiruna and Narvik and close to Abisko National Park.

  • Outdoor activities: Lies adjacent to Abisko National Park and is a focus for fishing, hiking and northern lights viewing in Swedish Lapland.

How to Get to Torneträsk #

Torneträsk lies along the E10 corridor in northern Sweden near Abisko. By rail you can take SJ or regional services toward the Kiruna/Narvik corridor and change for regional Norrtåg trains that stop at Abisko (Abisko Östra or Abisko Turiststation); from Abisko station it is a short walk (typically under 15 minutes) to the lake shore or local trailheads.

By car follow the E10 (road between Kiruna and Narvik); Torneträsk is reached from Abisko along local roads from the E10 (the drive from Kiruna to Abisko is commonly about an hour, depending on conditions).

Tips for Visiting Torneträsk #

  • Use the rail stop at Abisko (Abisko Östra/Abisko station) or road access from Kiruna/Abisko as the practical gateways to Torneträsk's western shores-these are the main transport links in the area.
  • For hiking and long daylight, visit in summer for the midnight sun; for aurora viewing, target the late‑autumn to early‑spring months-plan according to which phenomenon you prioritize.
  • If you want quieter shorelines and trails, start hikes very early or later in the evening; many day tourists concentrate around the main Abisko viewpoints, while longer trails along the lake are far less busy.
