Torcello Cathedral

The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta on Torcello is the principal church on the island of Torcello in the Venetian Lagoon, with an origin traditionally dated to the 7th century and the present basilica dating from the 11th century. The building is best known for its well-preserved Byzantine mosaics, including a large apse mosaic often called the Last Judgment.

The cathedral complex combines the main basilica, an adjacent 11th-century church and a medieval bell tower; the grouping represents Torcello’s importance in early Venetian history. Visitors come to view the mosaics, the modest museum display and the compact medieval architecture rather than to large cathedral-scale interiors.

Historically Torcello was an early lagoon centre founded in the early Middle Ages; the cathedral was founded in the 600s and the current basilica was consecrated in the early 11th century. As Venice grew the island’s population declined and the cathedral complex survived as a largely preserved medieval ensemble.

The island lies in the northern part of the Venetian Lagoon, north of Murano and reachable by waterbus or private boat from Venice’s central terminals. Torcello is set in a flat lagoon landscape and is visited as a quieter historical contrast to Venice’s main islands.
