Torcello is a small island in the northern Venetian Lagoon, northwest of Burano, known for its very early medieval settlement and surviving Byzantine mosaics. The island was an important lagoon centre in late antiquity and the early Middle Ages and retains a sparse, rural character today.

The primary draw is the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta with its 11th-century apse mosaics and the compact, octagonal Church of Santa Fosca nearby. Visitors also stroll the quiet lanes, see small archaeological displays and enjoy the island’s lagoon landscape rather than Venice-style urban density.

Torcello was settled in the 7th century as populations moved into the lagoon; it prospered in the early medieval period before a steady decline from the 12th to 14th centuries that reduced it to a small agricultural and fishing community. Many of the surviving monuments date to the island’s medieval heyday.

The island sits in the northern Venetian Lagoon, reachable by waterbus (vaporetto) or private boat from Venice and nearby islands; a typical boat trip from central Venice via Burano takes around 30-50 minutes depending on service.

  • Byzantine mosaics: Torcello contains 11th-century Byzantine mosaics in the basilica apse that are among the island's principal attractions.

What to See #

  • Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta: Built as a cathedral basilica, the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta preserves important Byzantine-style mosaics in its apse that date mainly from the 11th century.
  • Church of Santa Fosca: An adjacent round church with a compact plan forms a distinct architectural ensemble next to the basilica and is notable for its early medieval form.
  • Small Archaeological Museum: A small provincial museum houses finds from the lagoon and the island's early medieval phase, illustrating Torcello's role in early Venetian history.
  • Attila's Throne: A stone seat traditionally called 'Attila's Throne' sits in the central square and is an often-noted local curiosity rather than an actual royal seat.

How to Get to Torcello #

From central Venice go to Fondamenta Nuove and take the ACTV vaporetto towards Burano/Torcello (many services that call at Burano continue to Torcello). The boat trip from Fondamenta Nuove to Torcello typically takes around 40-60 minutes depending on stops. Fondamenta Nuove is reachable by vaporetto from San Marco or by a 20-30 minute walk through the city; there are no car routes to the island.

Tips for Visiting Torcello #

  • Take a vaporetto from Fondamenta Nuove or a short connection from Burano or Torcello-served lines and plan to arrive early-Torcello is at its quietest before the late-morning influx.
  • Spend time in the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta to see the early medieval mosaics and then walk the island's back lanes and causeways: many visitors only see the cathedral and miss the countryside atmosphere and viewpoint over the lagoon.
  • Be prepared for very limited services on the island-cafés and facilities are few and close earlier than on more tourist-heavy islands, so plan timing accordingly.
